ChatGPT Works in Japanese, Too!
Siri and Alexa may soon face retirement as a new wave of sentient-like chatbots take over.
OpenAI’s extraordinary new AI chatbot is known for developing and refining clear, well-organized paragraphs in English. It puts the well-known digital assistants Siri and Alexa to shame, and it works well in Japanese, too. Go to chat.openai.com/chat to try it out on your own; It’s free, by the way.
What it does: ChatGPT does not simply spit back information that can be found with a normal Google search. It excels at addressing open-ended questions by synthesizing disparate sources of information to prepare a logical, succinct answer that may be organized into multiple paragraphs. The quality of content and human-like writing style are unprecedented.
Test run in Japanese: On a whim I fed in 「空気が読めないとは」in Japanese, which translates to “What does the term inability ‘to read the the air’ mean?”
The result was a coherent explanation in a concise paragraph written in perfect Japanese.
, which is accurate and translates as “being unable ‘to read the air’ means not being able to grasp the situation, people's emotions and intentions. In other words, it means that you do not know what kind of situation you are in, and this causes problems in your relationships and conversations with others. Therefore, people who can read the air are able to build better relationships with people and communicate more smoothly (translation double-checked by DeepL Pro).”
Why it matters: ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize global communications and bridge divergent cultures.
The new technology represents a step-change improvement over previous iterations of machine-generated, narrative text.
Especially for communications in languages such as Japanese, which is fundamentally different from English, it will become less-obvious whether a piece of prose has, in fact, been formulated and subsequently translated into multiple languages by a computer.
While not instantaneous, the speed at which ChatGPT generates responses is very fast.
Given the fact that, at least for now, this technology has been made available to the general public for free, its value as a useful, cost-effective tool is assured.
The big picture: Questions abound about how this revolutionary technology will be used.
According to the news media, there are still lingering concerns about accuracy, but my simple test demonstrates encouraging results in Japanese.
There are also reports of ChatGPT, which is, apparently, constantly learning from its interaction with users, sometimes erroneously making up explanations. Thus, the potential to spread misinformation and spread deep fake messaging in multiple languages are still valid concerns.
Combined with the constantly evolving technology used to generate visual avatars, it is only a matter of time before this sentient-like mechanization converges, leading to the debut of cyborg television announcers, teachers, actors, and maybe even politicians.

Wow. And it's free!
I have much to learn about AI and avatars and ChatGPT. But here I go! Thank you, Mark and Ty, for launching me!
