Great article, Mark. Took me for a trip down memory lane. Thanks for writing your articles - they are great.

Great article, Mark! Your section on learning from peers reminded me of a situation in which I met up with a French colleague in Italy and we spoke Japanese to each other as my Japanese is better than my French and her Japanese is better than her English. We indeed got some strange looks!

Very helpful article for students of Japanese 👍🏽. I can also recommend apps like Say Hi Translate, great for pronunciation practice — and also for speaking your native tongue with translation into Japanese. https://www.sayhi.com/en/translate/

As a bilingual person (Spanish) I found this fascinating!! I, however, could never learn Japanese!! I lived with a Spanish family my senior year of college (Universidad de Sevilla). And only hung with Spanish people and Spanish students There were a lot of Americans there and they mostly all hung together. I’ll never be totally fluent in Spanish, but not too far off! You could say I learned Spanish eating tapas in the bars of Sevilla! I’m sure you probably knew parts of this from prior conversations.... Loved the article!
